North American Physical Features

by

Alistair Barrell

I am part of North America.
I am the Devil's Tower.
I am made up of 1000's of hexagonal pillars.
I am a volcanic plug.
I was formed about 1,000 years ago.
My surrounding land is scattered with boulders, fallen from hundreds of feet.
I am the Devil's Tower.
I am part of North America.

I am part of North America.
I am the Hoh rain forest.
I am located in the Olympic National Park.
I am green and lush.
I stretch from the north to the south of the park.
I am one of the northernmost rain forests in North America.
I am right by the coast.
I am the Hoh rain forest.
I am part of North America.

Kalaloch, Cape Disappointment and Oregon

At the risk of repeating myself...Olympic is really remote...beaches that go on for miles and miles and the only reason there are people is that we were at one of only two camping sites on a 100 mile stretch of coast...the beaches are untouched...almost too untouched...the forest bones pile up for miles making the beaches almost inacessable as you are forced to risk life and limb (well okay just limb) climbing over about 60 feet of beached drift logs...some of the logs are six feet wide and many are upwards of 60 feet long...real trees...minus the branches which they probably lost on the long journey down whatever river brought them to the sea and as they made their way pushed by the waves and the wind onto the beach...there are pebbles on the beach too...well at about 8 inches across they are more like little rocks...all bunched up against the steep cliff boundary of the beach...the high tides and winter storm waves must be awe inspiring to behold...luckily for us the weather was overcast but quite warm...the wind deciding to give us a day of respite which we spent sunning ourselves...walking on the beach...observing the porpoises, sea otters and miriad sea birds...

The rock pools are interesting...the life does not seem to be as diverse as the caribbean...but green sea anenomies were a surprise to us.

We then travelled South to the place where Lewis and Clark's Corp of Discovery first stood on the shores of the Pacific Ocean...Cape Disappointment...it wasn't quite the "disappointment" that Praj said it was for them...but other than the interpretive center and the monstrously big Columbia River Mouth...it is not much to behold...of course most of the excitement was in standing on the historic site itself...

Fort Clatsop...the Corp's winter quarters on what is now the Oregon side of the Columbia river was a little mor interesting as we saw a replica of the original fort and were given a demonstration of the loading and firing of a flintlock rifle.

The Oregon coastline has a reputataion...and it is well deserved...mile upon mile upon mile of wonderful beaches broken beautifully by large rock formations jutting out into the deep blue Pacific...and we have only covered the first 50 miles of about 350 miles of coastline...I imagine that by the time we hit California, Karin will be as bored of the beautiful coast as she was of the mountains...nah, don't think so!

Once again a smattering of images is in the vlog...

Cape Flattery and the Hoh Rainforest

The Olympic Peninsula is the most uninhabited area (other than the uninhabitable deserts of Wyoming and South Dakota) that we have passed through. Forest, after forest...clear cuts covered in fields of foxgloves...bald eagles soar the skies...and rocky, seaweed filled, low tide beaches for miles and miles with not a soul in sight...we have been lucky with the weather...no rain...the mornings are foggy and cold...the low coastal regions are cold and the inland mountains hot...the opposite of what you would expect...wind, wind and more wind and almost always from the North West...

Beautiful...hopefully we captured some of it in the vlog...Next stop Kalaloch Beach...

UPDATE: My large vlog file did not upload and so I created a low res version until I can get better Internet connection...sorry for the lack of detail until then and sorry to those who accessed the page while the video was not there...

Port Townsend and Olympic Mountains

Started the journey south...found a wonderful city on the Olympic Peninsula - Port Townsend...this is on the Juan de Fuca straights but only gets about 20 inches of rain per year because it is in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains...take a look at the vlog...the mountain you keep seeing in the distance is Mount Baker...it is impressive as it juts out 10000 feet above the surrounding territory...the views are spectacular here...out to sea is Vancouver island...when looking to land you see either Mount Baker, the Northern Cascades or the Olympic mountains...if there is no man-made building to spoil the view it is always spectacular...

Keep writing us with your comments...

This is the sea....

That was the river...and the plains and the mountains and the desert...but this is the sea...after 4000 miles of wonderful, surprising but almost always beautiful America, we have reached the San Juan islands on the Pacific Ocean...at the North Widbey Island State Park we lunched on a strip of unspoiled beach with a freshwater lake to our left, salt water to our right and the Olympic mountains in the distance...Sunset over the San Juan islands was magnificent and we were unwitting observers of a final farewell ceremony that a family performed for a loved one...with the sun setting...the tide going out...they placed the ashes on a makeshift driftwood boat...accompanied by roses and a candle they watched it carried out to sea...nosy seals inspecting...as if also paying final respect...it was the most beautiful and moving ceremony...

vlog in the extended entry as always...tomorrow it is on to the Olympic mountains and the first leg of our trip where the general direction is South, no longer West...

Winthrop and Northern Cascades

We were in old western Winthrop, WA...authentic western town where every new building must be built according to the old technologies and the western look and feel...the nearby town of Twisp is the center of 400 miles of biking and hiking trails...heaven for Justin and Marcel...we investigated a couple of the trails on Sun Mountain near Winthrop...of course the Northern Cascade mountains are heaven for Mountain pass onroad cyclists and we saw a good deal of them on our way up and down...take a look at the vlog in the extended entry...tomorrow we make the ocean...

Whitefish, Kootenai and Osoyoos

Washington surprises just like Idaho before it. Green turns into desert and sagebrush is the most prolific plant in Western North America. Karin is getting sick and tired of mountains and some of the most beautiful mountain countryside is starting to look boringly everyday. Oh woe are we ;-)

Next time - Tuscany in Canada?
