North American Physical Features

by

Alistair Barrell

I am part of North America.
I am the Devil's Tower.
I am made up of 1000's of hexagonal pillars.
I am a volcanic plug.
I was formed about 1,000 years ago.
My surrounding land is scattered with boulders, fallen from hundreds of feet.
I am the Devil's Tower.
I am part of North America.

I am part of North America.
I am the Hoh rain forest.
I am located in the Olympic National Park.
I am green and lush.
I stretch from the north to the south of the park.
I am one of the northernmost rain forests in North America.
I am right by the coast.
I am the Hoh rain forest.
I am part of North America.

Yellowstone

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...this definitely applies to our time in Yellowstone...never before in my life have I spent one day where I was so amazed and awed by such tremendous beauty so many times...every bend in the road brings a new wonder..."wow" is the word I used most often...

I also used the word "Ow"...the day we arrived, after dinner we all went to bed early so we could get an early start...it was a beautiful clear evening when we turned in and were soon fast asleep...only to be woken at 1am by a loud crash as the awning was bent backwards over the top of the RV...we looked out the window to see our tent blowing across the field like tumbleweed...

it is difficult to do justice to Yellowstone with photos and video...let me know what you think of the vlog in the extended entry...

On to Idaho and the craters of the moon...

Deadwood and Devil's Tower

On the way out of the black hills we passed through Deadwood, South Dakota. Really pretty old Western town...but badly abused by the tourist industry...its still worth a visit though and definitely beats Vegas...although the ladies are not real (see vlog)...we said goodbye to SOuth Dakota and its creepy road signs that show you where people have died in an auto accident...its one thing for family members to put up flowers and crosses like they do in Michigan...but for the state to erect official road signs...creepy...but effective...

Wyoming is amazing...driving along flat land all around...and what look like (to someone who has lived in Switzerland) avalanche protction barriers...but in Switzerland these are never placed on flat ground...hmmm...they seem to be located on the West side of the roads...oh!! Winter must really SUCK here if they need to put up snow barriers along the roads...

I learnt something about dandelions in Wyoming (this one is for Jeff Terrell)...they can look great when an entire open field is covered in them and some other white and purple wild flowers...don't look so good in my lawn though...

Devil's tower is difficult to do justice to...you have to go there and see it for yourself. I tried in the vlog...spent the night camped below Devil's Tower...tomorrow Big Horn
